Family Film Series: Twentieth Century
Saturday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m.

Join us for the last in the Family Film Series on Saturday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. when we will show the 1934 hit Twentieth Century starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard.

Broadway director Oscar Jaffe is a bigger ham than most actors, but through sheer drive and talent he is able to build a successful career. When one of his discoveries, Lily Garland, rises to stardom and heeds the call of Hollywood, Oscar begins a career slide. He hits the skids and seems on his way out, until he chances to meet Lily again, on a train ride aboard the Twentieth Century Limited. Oscar pulls out all the stops to re-sign his former star, but it's a battle... because Lily, who is as temperamental as Oscar is, wants to have nothing to do with her former mentor.

The films in the series were drawn from the collection of the late Raymond Schoonover of New York City. Refreshments will be served.

Get Fit! Workshops to Begin at the Library
Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape? Do you look out your window and see more and more people in our region walking and running for exercise (and smiling!)? Join them! We want to motivate you to explore the world of walking and running—at your own pace, with other beginners, and armed with important information that will aid you in your quest to get fit.

Starting in March, the library will begin a series of workshops on fitness. Although the focus of the workshops will be running, most of them will contain valuable information for people interested in a variety of sports. On Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. we welcome Dan Curtin of the Kinderhook Runners’ Group and Karen Dolge, a local runner who has successfully balanced her love of running with raising a family and a career in advertising. Dan will talk about the Kinderhook Runners’ Group, running opportunities in and around Kinderhook, and runners’ etiquette—not only for runners during races but also for drivers sharing the roadway with runners. Karen, who will be running the Boston Marathon for the fifth time this spring (her ninth marathon), will talk about running while pregnant and other factors of balancing family life with running, how to stay motivated, and her experiences while training for marathons. Both Dan and Karen will answer any questions you may have and a variety of resources available through the library will be displayed.

Upcoming workshops will focus on nutrition and common running injuries on Tuesday, April 3, stretching and shoe selection on Tuesday, April 24, and cross training and triathlon on Tuesday, May 15.

We also intend to get a group of library lovers together to run or walk the OK 5k on Saturday, June 9. If you’re interested in joining us, please email or phone Julie. This is a great race to run as a beginner and there are still more than three months left to train!

Stress Management Workshop
Monday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Stress can negatively impact our health, our interactions with others, our sleep patterns and our mental state. Many workplaces are now offering workshops in stress management to improve their employees' productivity and lives. But if you are retired or not lucky enough to have workshops like this offered at your job, where do you turn? Your doctor is the obvious choice, but we're pleased to offer you another source.

The Columbia County Healthcare Consortium will present a workshop on stress management at the library on Monday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. Joan Blumburg of the Columbia County Mental Health Department will give an overview of tips and tricks to help you manage your stress.

The Healthcare Consortium is a rural health network made up of your friends and neighbors from the health care, business and consumer sectors. No registration is required for this workshop.

Book Discussion Groups at the Library
Fiction or Non-Fiction, We've Got You Covered!

The Circle of Readers will meet on Monday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable, beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But with the devastation, Hosseini also gives us hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows for redemption.

The Next Page Book Club will meet on Wednesday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book Middlemarch by George Eliot (due to winter weather, the discussion of this book was delayed). The next book to be discussed is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen on April 11.

The Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the book Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser. Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning. The next book to be discussed is Guns, Germs, and Steel: the Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond on April 16.

Family Film Series: In a Lonely Place
Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m.

Join us at the library on Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. for the 1950 classic, In a Lonely Place starring Humphrey Bogart.

Screenwriter Dixon Steele, faced with the odious task of scripting a trashy bestseller, has hat-check girl Mildred Atkinson tell him the story in her own words. Later that night, Mildred is murdered and Steele is a prime suspect; his record of belligerence, anger, and macabre sense of humor tell against him. Fortunately, lovely neighbor Laurel Gray gives him an alibi. Laurel proves to be just what Steele needs, and their friendship ripens into love. Will suspicion, doubt, and Steele's inner demons come between them?

Refreshments will be served.
