Book Clubs at the Library
Fiction or Non-Fiction, We've Got You Covered

The Next Page Book Club will meet on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson. This book is a cycle of short stories concerning life in a small Ohio town at the end of the nineteenth century. At the center is George Willard, a young reporter who becomes the confidant of the town's `grotesques' - solitary figures unable to communicate with others. George is their conduit for expression and solace from loneliness, but he has his own longings which eventually draw him away from home to seek a career in the city. He carries with him the dreams and unuttered words of remarkable characters such as Wing Biddlebaum, the disgraced former teacher, and the story-telling Doctor Parcival. The next book to be discussed is Jude, the Obscure by Thomas Hardy on June 13.

The Circle of Readers will meet on Monday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss the book The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason. In 1886 a shy, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches its protagonist into a world of seductive loveliness and nightmarish intrigue. And as he follows Drake's journey, Mason dazzles readers with his erudition, moves them with his vibrantly rendered characters, and enmeshes them in the unbreakable spell of his storytelling. The next book to be discussed is Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts on June 11.

The Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Monday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the book The Wal-Mart Effect : How the World's Most Powerful Company Really Works, and How It's Transforming the American Economy by Charles Fishman. Wal-Mart is not just the world's largest company--it is the largest company in the history of the world. It is estimated that the company's low prices save American consumers $10 billion a year--but the #1 employer in 37 states has never let a union in the door. Though 70% of Americans now live within a 15-minute drive of a Wal-Mart, we have not even begun to understand the true power of the company. We know about the lawsuits and the labour protests, but what we don't know is how profoundly the "Wal-Mart effect" is changing America's economy, our workforce, our communities, and our environment. The next book to be discussed is The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty by Caroline Alexander on June 18.

Documentary Film Series: Gift of the Game
Saturday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m.

The next movie in our documentary film series, Gift of the Game, will be shown on Saturday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Ernest Hemingway had founded a little league team for his son Gregory when they were living in Cuba called the GiGi Stars. Acclaimed Florida novelist and adventurer Randy Wayne White embarks on a journey with friends Bill "Spaceman" Lee (former pitcher of the Boston Red Sox), Jon Warden (former pitcher of the Detroit Tigers) and a ragtag group of 50-something-year-old baseball buddies and heads to Cuba to uncover this missing chapter from Hemingway's life.

Armed with little more than the address of Hemingway's Finca, cartons of baseball gear, and a whole lot of enthusiasm, the group finds the boys-now-men who were once GiGi stars and, in the process, embark on a comic and dramatic journey into the fabric of their own lives. Some film highlights include former GiGis reminiscing about playing ball with "Papa;" legendary Cuban pitcher the Man with 100 Moves; Bill Lee's Zen tactics, and an eerie recollection of the dark days of Mariel.

A playful and warm-hearted film, Gift of the Game offers a refreshing look at the possibility of building bridges between disparate cultures.

Other films in the series will be An Inconvenient Truth on June 23, Racing Against the Clock on July 28, Sir, No Sir on August 25, and Our Brand Is Crisis on September 22.

For the Love of Books: Leith Colen, Editor of The Book Bag
Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Leith Colen, founder and editor of The Book Bag, will speak at the library on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. Leith Colen was not a reader. She realized this in her 60's when she moved in with her partner, Zane Lumelsky, and his massive book collection occupied an entire room of the house. Instead of dwelling on the gap in her literary knowledge, Leith began to read. For ten years, she read classics, children's books, novels, biographies...anything that was well reviewed. And then she began to write her own recommendations and reviews for friends.

So began The Book Bag: An Autodidact's Literary Newsletter for Those Who Want to Read More Than Just Best Sellers. The newsletter, which has 400 subscribers, is put out bi-monthly and carries a theme every issue. Whether the theme is camp, gardening, or books that have been made into movies, Leith reviews books on the subject and doesn't limit her entries to just those she likes. "I have learned that it's never too late to become a reader," she says. You gain so much from reading and it can help you through difficult times. Reading is a wonderful thing you do for yourself."
